CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Mr. Eko. Also known as Eko Tunde, but he generally goes by Eko, with or without the "mister," depending on the person.
BRIEF HISTORY:
Mr. Eko lived most of his life in Nigeria, feeling intimately connected to the land and his people. At a young age, Eko was conscripted into an area gang, pulled out of the small town he and his brother Yemi had called home. While most men would be resentful of this sudden change in situation, Eko knew he had made his own choice and stood by it, even if the road ahead looked dark and painful. By saving his younger brother's soul and killing the man the gang was trying to goad Yemi into shooting, Eko changed his own life.
Eko grew up a member of this and other gangs, moving across the Nigerian landscape, taking what they wanted, selling what they didn't need, and reaping as many benefits as they could. Eko always internally rationalized his actions by telling himself he was helping the Nigerian people in some way; this is how he explained himself to Yemi when they met again much later in life, as Eko tried to convince his brother the priest to aid them in a drug smuggling scheme: by moving the drugs out of Nigeria, they would be ensuring that less of their native people were pulled into its thralls.
The plan didn't work as Eko had foreseen, though, ending in Yemi's premature, tragic death and Eko being forced to take cover as a Catholic priest in order to escape legal persecution. Eko donned his brother's robe and stiff collar and tried his hand at the business of being a priest. It didn't suit him very well, and perhaps because Eko did have faith, he always felt as if he was betraying his brother's memory by lying to the Catholic Church.
Eko even went so far as to take up Yemi's planned post in England, where he studied and worked in a small parish. He was sent to Australia to investigate rumors of a miracle, which Eko himself certainly did not believe in. After convincing himself that the news of a dead girl brought back to life was nothing more than an overexcited mother and an incompetant mortician, Eko prepared to board his plane, Oceanic flight 815, when the girl confronted him, bringing with her a message from Eko's dead brother Yemi.
Thoughts of Yemi haunted Eko all during the flight, up until the devastating crash that changed his life and drove all other thoughts out of his mind. Little did he know that on this strange, random island, Eko would find his brother's lost corpse and his own lost faith.
Eko did not die from his altercation with Smokey. He was left seriously injured, but with the help of Jack and what he believes was the power of God, he recovered. He now walks with a slight limp and sometimes gets painful headaches.
PERSONALITY:
Mr. Eko is stoic, determined and faithful. He's gone through a lot, obviously, and his experiences, by and large, have taught him the importance of faith, kindness and inner strength. He would not say he has lived the best or most sinless life, but Eko has accepted the choices he made and constantly works toward making the better choice next time.
Like Locke, although he has not put it in so many words, Eko believes everyone on the island was brought there for a reason -- and that specific reason was rebirth. With that in mind, once Eko accepted his fate, he has tried to be a rock for the others and provide some sort of support in whatever way he can.
